Caterpillar 215 kW Propane Generator Set The Town of Mansfield will soon be offering for sale a Caterpillar 215 kW propane generator set. The generator is currently installed and operational at one of the Towns water treatment facilities and is being replaced as part of a facility upgrade. Availability Notice: The Town is offering this generator for sale at this time; however, the successful bidder is advised that the generator will not be available for pickup until the replacement equipment has been installed and placed into service. The replacement is currently scheduled to be completed within the next several months. The Town will coordinate the pickup date with the successful bidder once the existing generator has been removed from service. Condition: This generator is currently operational and is in overall very good condition. It has been professionally maintained by Caterpillar since it was placed into service, with preventative maintenance performed twice annually throughout its service life. The generator was most recently serviced by Milton CAT on August 4, 2026, and there are no known mechanical or electrical issues. The generator has been reliable in municipal service and is being replaced solely as part of a facility upgrade, not because of any known operational issues. The factory non-sound-attenuated enclosure is structurally sound but would benefit from light cosmetic maintenance. Some areas are beginning to show their age and could use minor sanding, touch-up, and repainting to preserve the finish. There is no evidence of rot or structural deterioration, and addressing these cosmetic areas now would help prevent future deterioration and keep the enclosure in excellent condition. The generator was originally supplied by an on-site 1,000-gallon propane storage tank. The propane tank can be included in the sale if necessary. The successful bidder would be required to have a qualified company remove and transport the tank in accordance with all applicable Massachusetts laws and regulations. Under typical full-load operating conditions, the 1,000-gallon tank provided approximately 20 hours of runtime before refueling was required. As is common with many large propane- and natural gas-fired industrial generator engines, this unit may consume engine oil during extended operation under heavy load. During one extended outage lasting approximately four consecutive days, the generator required periodic shutdowns to check and replenish engine oil. Caterpillar has advised that this level of oil consumption is a normal operating characteristic of large spark-ignited propane and natural gas engines during prolonged, heavily loaded operation. Routine monitoring of engine oil level during extended runtime is recommended. This characteristic has not affected the generators reliability or its ability to carry its rated electrical load. Transportation: The Town of Mansfield will provide a crane and operator to lift the generator onto the purchasers truck at the time of pickup. The purchaser shall be responsible for securing the load, transportation, rigging, and all other shipping arrangements. This generator remains in active municipal service until its scheduled replacement and will continue to be maintained until it is removed from service.
